Antique chest made of wood with Chinese calligraphy in red ink (c.1850).
This chest was recovered and restored by hand, and is estimated to be about 170 years old, with the approximate year of construction: 1850. This small chest was built from solid pine wood using ancient glueless assembly techniques, and it is in good condition. It is characterized by the illustration in red ink of an everyday scene that has been preserved in fairly good condition. Also intact is the metal clasp that is believed to be from the original lock. Regarding the construction of this wooden chest, we highlight its “dovetail” assembly characteristic of past times when the use of glue was practically non-existent. In these times, the construction of furniture was based on the perfect fit of the different pieces of wood, and the dovetail assembly was one of the star assemblies in the art of carpentry.
