Description
Solid pine wood antique kneading bowl (France, c.1900).
Our round-shaped antique kneading bowl was formerly used to knead dough with flour and water for baking bread. It has an estimated age of about 120 years, and was recovered from a farmhouse in the French Pyrenees.
This antique wooden bowl is oval in shape with two handles to better work the dough. It was recovered in a perfect state of preservation.
Formerly these types of trays were used and shared in a community. For example, a group of peasants or perhaps a landowner with several peasants taking care of their lands, formed a community where household utensils were shared from family to family. For this reason, we found many wooden trays with some brand or identity sign allowing us to identify the owners of each one.
Note the color of the solid pine wood in this antique tray. As in one of our wooden sideboards made of pine wood, pine wood is very resistant over the years and requires very little maintenance. Pine wood is ideal for the construction of containers for kneading flour.

– HISTORIC NOTE –
Wooden kneading bowls have been used since the Middle Ages throughout Europe. Flour was and continues to be a staple food on the European continent. On many occasions, once the flour was obtained from wheat, instead of being stored, it was kneaded directly. This was due to the fear of insect pests that could spoil the flour.
