Exceptional original Japanese tansu chest of drawers from the late Edo period, predating the modernization of Japan, when furniture was entirely handcrafted and conceived to meet the specific needs of domestic life.
The piece is made of paulownia (Paulownia spp.), a wood traditionally prized for its lightness, stability, and natural resistance to humidity, making it ideal for household storage. The interiors of the drawers retain the pale tone characteristic of kiri wood, while the drawer fronts and outer structure display a deep, natural patina developed through decades of use.
Its composition is particularly rich and uncommon: four large front drawers combined with an integrated side module featuring smaller drawers and a compartment with a door. This asymmetrical arrangement responds to a strictly functional logic typical of Edo-period tansu, giving the piece a strong sculptural presence.
The abundant, thick wrought iron fittings reinforce corners, drawer fronts, and closures. Originally intended for structural strength and protection, they now stand as one of the most striking aesthetic elements, emphasizing the cabinet’s age, authenticity, and utilitarian origins.
A piece of strong character, suitable as a chest of drawers, low sideboard, or storage cabinet. It integrates naturally into contemporary, wabi-sabi, or eclectic interiors, bringing material depth, history, and presence.
The state of conservation is optimal, except for the characteristic imperfections of any antique produced by the passage of time.
