This Japanese tansu from the Meiji period stands out for the quality of its materials and a construction designed for demanding domestic use. Its vertical format and generous proportions give the piece a strong architectural presence, conceived to provide ample storage while maintaining visual balance.

The cabinet combines Japanese chestnut (Castanea crenata) and Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica). Chestnut, denser and more resistant, is used in structural elements and drawer fronts, offering durability and a pronounced grain. Japanese cedar appears in secondary and interior components, contributing lightness, stability, and good performance in humid environments. This combination is typical of higher-quality Meiji-period tansu.

The front is organized around large drawers and compartments, reinforced with original wrought-iron fittings: circular lock plates, corner reinforcements, and restrained handles. These elements serve both a structural and protective purpose while adding a strong graphic identity. The wood displays a deep, warm patina, with wear marks, abrasions, and softened edges that speak of long-term, authentic use.

During the Meiji period (1868–1912), Japanese furniture evolved toward more rational and durable solutions, adapting to new forms of domestic organization while preserving traditional craftsmanship. Tansu from this era are noted for their modular construction, structural clarity, and intelligent use of different woods according to function.

With its dimensions, this tansu works naturally as a main chest of drawers, storage cabinet, or a statement piece in contemporary, Japanese-inspired, or eclectic interiors.

The state of conservation is optimal, except for the characteristic imperfections of any antique produced by the passage of time.

Give a point of originality to your home with a unique piece, which merges with the contemporary style bringing personality to your home. This antique Japanese Tansu can be combined with any of our kitchen islands or with our available antique coffee tables.
