Vertical Japanese filing cabinet made between the late Meiji period and the early Taishō period, circa 1880–1926. This utilitarian piece was designed for the organized storage of documents, correspondence or records, commonly used in Japanese offices and shops at the turn of the century.
The cabinet combines Japanese chestnut for the outer structure, valued for its strength and durability, with paulownia inside the drawers, a lightweight and stable wood that facilitates everyday use. It features a series of narrow, deep drawers, designed for vertical document filing.
The original metal hardware, simple and functional, reinforces the structure and emphasizes its utilitarian character. The surface displays a deep, dark patina, with signs of wear consistent with its age, adding authenticity and visual depth.
