Original Japanese tansu chest of drawers from the late Meiji to Taishō period, a transitional moment in Japan when traditional craftsmanship coexisted with emerging technical and aesthetic influences.
The piece is crafted from a combination of paulownia (Paulownia spp.) and Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica), two woods widely used in tansu construction for their lightness, stability, and resistance to humidity. The structure is reinforced with abundant wrought iron fittings that serve both structural and decorative purposes.
Its composition is distinctly asymmetrical: broad front drawers are paired with a narrower side module incorporating smaller drawers and a compartment with a door. Originally conceived for practical domestic use, this layout today gives the piece a strong sculptural presence and a surprisingly contemporary visual balance.
The softened patina of the wood, shaped by time and use, together with the aged ironwork, lends the cabinet a material depth that is difficult to replicate in modern furniture. Large circular crests and decorative iron plates further emphasize its character and authenticity.
