Japanese storage chest made between the late Meiji period and the early Taishō period, circa 1868–1926. This high-quality domestic piece was designed for everyday use, intended for the organized storage of clothing, textiles or personal belongings.
The cabinet features a balanced arrangement of drawers combined with a side compartment with hinged door, an uncommon solution that adds functional interest. The drawer fronts are crafted from Japanese zelkova, a highly prized hardwood known for its strength and striking grain, clearly visible throughout the piece.
The structure is complemented by paulownia inside the drawers for lightness and Japanese cedar in structural elements. The original iron hardware, including circular lock plates and decorative corner reinforcements, enhances its authenticity and character.
A compact yet highly expressive chest, ideal as an auxiliary cabinet, low chest of drawers or statement piece in contemporary, Japanese-inspired or wabi-sabi interiors.
The state of conservation is optimal, except for the characteristic imperfections of any antique produced by the passage of time.
