Original Japanese low table from the Shōwa period, conceived for everyday use within the traditional Japanese home. Its reduced scale and clear structure respond to a way of inhabiting space at floor level, where each object was required to be functional, stable, and discreet.
The piece is crafted from kalopanax (Kalopanax septemlobus), a wood valued in Japan for its lightness, stability, and uniform grain. Used in both domestic furniture and interior carpentry, kalopanax offers a warm and sober texture, well suited to pieces intended for daily use.
The design combines a simple rectangular top with a low supporting structure and a set of drawers integrated on one side, providing storage without disrupting the formal clarity of the whole. Visible wear on the surface and edges of the top is consistent with decades of use, resulting in an honest, natural patina.
