Antique wooden chest restored by hand. This oriental-style Chinese chest has been recovered and restored by hand. It is estimated to be about 180 years old. And it is made of solid pine wood. In perfect condition, it is characterized by the illustration of an oriole lying on a branch with very well defined and well preserved lines. The original metal closure is still intact. We also highlight its dovetail joint characteristic of that time.

Illustrations of birds on furniture and in general in Chinese art represent hidden messages for the viewer. Each species of bird has its own meaning and does not always have a flattering meaning. Por ejemplo, ilustraciones de búhos y cuervos son signos de malos presagios. As a curiosity, in some places statues of owls were placed at the entrances of houses to ward off evil spirits.
In the case of this antique chest, we believe that due to the black color of its wings and tail, the bird drawn is an oriole. In the Chinese imagination, the so-called Baltimore Oriole is associated with happiness and when it appears in drawings it represents friendship. Possibly, a chest with a drawing of an oriole was the perfect gift for a good friend or as a gift to start a good business relationship.
And just a small note about the Chinese character for bird: 鸟. Doesn’t it look exactly like a picture of a bird?
