– HISTORIC NOTE –
The ancient Chinese Empire was for many centuries a benchmark in the manufacture of vases and other ceramic articles. Chinese porcelain vases were world famous and appreciated by the European royal elites as a symbol of power, status and social position.
While ceramics per se are known globally, the details of the manufacturing and especially the distinction between different qualities of ceramics remain quite unknown to the public. In general lines, two large groups can be distinguished: low temperature firing ceramics and high temperature firing ceramics. Porcelain is the example of high temperature firing that begins to cook at 1000 degrees. On the other hand, ceramics composed basically of clay are fired from 400 degrees and do not have the hardness that porcelain can obtain. For this reason, low-temperature ceramics have had a basically ornamental use.
