Description

Oriental wardrobe made of solid wood with a painting of a typical Chinese dress called qipao (旗袍).

This wardrobe has been hand-built by craftsmen specialized in restoring antique furniture. The red lacquer is of excellent quality and reproduces the effect of an original lacquer on antique piece over a hundred years old.

This oriental wardrobe consists of a pair of doors and three drawers placed in the lower part of the structure. It is made of solid pine wood with great durability and robustness. You can see the thickness of the pine wood in the detail photos. We use wood of identical thickness to furniture built in the 19th and early 20th centuries, because we want it to be a wardrobe for a lifetime.

We highlight the work done by our artisans in the finish of the lacquer that reproduces the lacquer used in past centuries in antique wooden furniture. This is due to the fact that we commission the construction of this type of wooden cabinet to specialists in the restoration of antique furniture. In the photos of this oriental bedroom wardrobe, you can also see the detail in the assembly of the drawers’ “dovetail”, an assembly that has been used throughout history to join two pieces of wood without glue and ensuring great strength in the union.

— HISTORIC NOTE —

The traditional Chinese dress called qipao 旗袍 was established by the Qing dynasty in the seventeenth century. The exact origin of this clothing was for use in the organization of different classes

With the arrival of the Manchus to the imperial throne in the 17th century, many changes occurred in Chinese society. The new Manchu dynasty called the Qing dynasty was hierarchically organized into eight parts called the eight-flag system. Each citizen dressed according to the membership of his family in a different flag. With the introduction of the Han ethnic group into the Manchu system, the Han people were forced to wear a certain piece instead of wearing the traditional dress from the Ming dynasty era. Since then, this Manchu clothing called qipao was institutionalized as traditional Chinese clothing.

In the 1920s, the qipao was popularized by the Chinese accommodating classes of the more cosmopolitan Shanghai and its use spread throughout the Western world.
