Description
Antique wooden tray also called artesa used in the past to knead the dough. It has an age estimated to be about 180 years old, year of manufacture in the middle of the 19th century. It was recovered from a farmhouse in the Aragonese Pyrenees. Our antique dough tray is a long wooden tray that is 108 cm long and about 37 cm wide. It was recovered in a perfect state of preservation.
The engraving of the letter “V” stands out, which is supposed to be the signature of the carpenter craftsman or the initial of the tray owner. Formerly this type of trays were used and shared in community. For example, a group of peasants or also a landowner with several peasants who took care of their lands formed a community where household utensils were shared from family to family. For that reason we find bread troughs or artesas with some brand or identity sign that allowed to identify the belonging of each antique wooden tray.
Also noteworthy is the color of the pine wood on this decorative tray. Like one of our wooden sideboards made of pine wood, pine wood is very resistant over the years and its centenary wood requires very little maintenance. For this reason and also for its high supply in the region, pine wood was ideal for the construction of bread troughs to knead flour.

Kneading bowls have been used since the Middle Ages throughout Europe. Flour was and continues to be a staple food on the European continent. On many occasions, once the flour was obtained from wheat, instead of being stored, it was kneaded directly. This was due to the fear of insect pests that could spoil the flour.
