Small Japanese kodansu storage chest made during the Meiji period, late 19th to early 20th century. Designed for storing documents, personal belongings or valuables, it combines a hinged top lid with integrated front drawers.

The piece is primarily crafted from Japanese cedar, valued for its lightness and stability, with reinforced elements and drawer fronts in Japanese zelkova, a highly prized hardwood in traditional Japanese furniture for its strength and attractive grain. The original metal fittings reinforce the structure and corners.

The surface shows a deep, dark patina with signs of use consistent with its age, enhancing its authenticity. A compact yet highly characterful piece, ideal as auxiliary storage, a document chest or an accent object in wabi-sabi or contemporary interiors.

The state of conservation is optimal, except for the characteristic imperfections of any antique produced by the passage of time.
