Oriental wooden statue of guardian lion.
This statue is sculpted in wood and measures 20cm high.
It represents a traditional guardian lion from the Chinese imperial era. Guardian lions used to be built in stone and placed at the entrances of buildings to protect them from evil spirits as well as people of disrepute. Normally it was a pair of lions on each side of the entrance door that carried out tasks of guarding and protecting the building in question. They consisted of a male guardian lion with a ball under one leg and another female lion with a cub in her claws.
This type of wooden statue became popular during the introduction of Buddhism in China, and their popularity spread throughout all Buddhist-influenced countries. These types of large oriental statues can be found guarding tombs, official residences, local governments, banks in various countries such as Japan, Korea, Singapore, Burma, Cambodia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Nepal among others.
