Gaudí’s furniture: the design of the imaginary

Antoni Gaudí is world-renowned for his work as an architect in the beautiful Catalan city of Barcelona. A designer of genius, he marked the beginnings of modernism at the turn of the 20th century with no less than seven works listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. However, there are fewer traces of the singular furniture he designed.

Thonet furniture: a great family business

A historic brand

Michael Thonet, founder of the Thonet furniture brand known as “Thonet frères” in Vienna, revolutionized the furniture industry by inventing the principle of “mass-produced” furniture in the mid-19th century. A modest cabinetmaker at the start of his career, he had the idea of simplifying the manufacture of furniture at the time, and in particular of making chairs in 6 separate pieces.

There is nothing more soothing and joyful than strolling through the vast halls of the MOCO Museum in Barcelona. This former 16th century palace, which belonged to an important noble family, has been preserved over time, then carefully renovated respecting the Past in order to house this museum . This new independent space dedicated to contemporary art is located in the central district of El Born.
