Natural wood sideboard with antique doors over one hundred years old (c.1900).
This antique wooden cabinet has been stripped to bring out its natural wood color. In addition, it is composed of two large spaces that open with four solid pine wood doors.
We have to highlight the fact that this sideboard is built with old doors from around the 1900s. The doors come from gateways to temples, palaces, and courtyards from the Imperial Chinese era. Later, these old doors were restored with a process of stripping and waxing with beeswax. The natural color of pine wood exudes an exquisite sobriety that makes it timeless and persistent over time.

Going deeper with the recovery of its old doors, we can tell you that they were part of the entrance doors to houses and palaces. The traditional Chinese architectural structure was the so-called siheyuan (四合院). This type of architectural complex was the basis of the residences of the Chinese wealthy society of the imperial era. It was based on a rectangular central courtyard surrounded by four buildings, each one performing a different function both in terms of social position and division of tasks.
Many residences of this type used to be temples, palaces, or residences of Empire officials, wealthy merchants, and wealthy families of the time. Various siheyuan formed a network of alleys called hutong (胡同). These types of constructions still exist around the forbidden city of Beijing although the Chinese economic boom and the absence of basic amenities is displacing its residents into buildings of more recent construction.
